Мамулян, великолепно владеющий техникой, демонстрирует неизменную виртуозность в форме, выстраивая рассказ и режиссуру на вторжении объектов, теней, умелых движений камеры, которые, в сочетании с пылкой игрой актеров, создают невероятно плодотворный синтез между немым и звуковым кино. Звуковой ряд также содержит ряд важных нововведений (закадровые диалоги на ночных грезах героини в тюрьме: звук выстрелов, искаженный телефоном в сцене убийства героя Пола Лукаса, и т. д.).Мамулян не скрывает отвращения и глубокого презрения к миру, показываемому на экране.
